컴퓨터 레이서들의 꿈에 한층 더 가깝게 접근한 로지텍의 신형 휠을 드디어 입수. 분명 지금까지의 포스 피드백 휠과는 격이 다르다. 강력함과 부드러움이 결합된 새로운 감각을 느낄 수 있는 제품이 바로 G25다.
무게는 약 10kg. 파손 방지를 위해 이중으로 포장되어 있다. 현재 PC/PS2와의 호환성 만이 알려져 있지만 이 박스에 붙은 스티커에는 PS3와의 호환성을 암시하는 문구가 쓰여있다. 그것이 착오인지 스포일러인지는 각자 판단하기로 하자. 소문에 의하면 곧 발매될 Need for Speed:Carbon도 G25의 6단 쉬프터를 지원한다고 한다. 그렇다면 Gran Turismo의 차기작에서도 6단 쉬프터 지원을 기대해 볼 수 있지 않을까?
이것이 실제 포장 박스. 깔끔하게 마감되어 있다. 박스 크기는 Driving Force Pro(이후 DFP로 표기)에 비해 약간 길지만 부피는 작다.
상자를 열면 깔끔하게 포장된 구성품을 볼 수 있다. 완충제가 거의 들어있지 않다는 점이 조금 의아했는데 그만큼 재질과 강도에 자신있다는 것이리라. 아닌게 아니라 첫 인상은 역시 무게감으로 다가왔다. 이번 제품은 스테인레스 스틸을 적극적으로 활용했기 때문에 제법 묵직한 편이다. 특히 페달부의 무게는 기대 이상이다.
드디어 휠과의 첫 대면이다. Momo 휠의 디자인을 차용하고 있어서 더욱 스포티한 느낌이다. 한눈에도 직경이 커졌다는 것을 알 수 있는데, 림의 두께도 DFP에 비해 얇아져서 손에 좀 더 밀착되는 느낌이다. 가죽 마감 덕분에 오래도록 쥐고 있어도 끈적이지 않는다는 것도 큰 매력이다. 휠 스포크에 배치된 버튼은 2개 뿐인데 쉬프터부의 것을 포함한 전체 버튼 수는 DFP와 동일하다. 특이점은 휠의 중심과 축의 중심이 일치하지 않는다는 점이다. 즉, 실차의 스티어링 휠에 적용된 옵셋처럼 중심축이 약간 아래에 있어서 휠을 당기기 용이해졌다.
뒷면에 배치된 패들 쉬프터. 오른쪽이 업, 왼쪽이 다운이다. 당기면 내부의 스위치가 마우스 버튼처럼 ‘딸깍’하고 소리를 낸다. 스테인레스 스틸 재질로 DFP의 플라스틱 쉬프터에 비교할 수 없는 고품질이다.
참고로 이것이 DFP의 패들 쉬프터. 플라스틱으로 일체 성형되어 있어서 장난감 같다는 평을 듣게된 결정적인 부분이다.
전면의 모습. 스포츠카를 연상시키는 디자인이다. 성형 상태도 무척 좋다. DFP와 같은 900도 회전각을 지원하지만 내부적으로는 다르다. DFP가 200도 고정을 위해 가변식으로 기계적인 벽을 설치했던 것과는 달리 이것에는 그런 장치가 없다. 대신 포스 피드백으로 가상의 벽을 구현해서 휠이 설정각 이상으로 쉽게 넘어가지 않도록 잡아준다. 따라서 회전각 변경시 덜커덩거리는 기계음은 더이상 들을 수 없다.
각종 연결단자는 깔끔하게 안쪽에 배치되어 있다. 당겨서 빠지지 않도록 선을 감는 부품이 있고, 4개의 홈이 있어서 모두 뒤쪽으로 깔끔하게 배출할 수 있다.
즉, 이렇게 정리할 수 있다는 것. 그리고 거치대에 단단히 고정될 수 있도록 나사 구멍이 준비되어 있다.
내부 사진 모음.
이것이 페달부. 43cm의 길이로 한층 거대하고 무겁다. 밟아보면 기존의 페달과는 한차원 다른 감각을 느낄 수 있다. 스테인레스 스틸 골조로 이루어진 페달은 각기 압력이 다른데, 특히 브레이크 페달을 밟을 때는 의자가 뒤로 밀릴 정도로 단단하다. 비로소 실차의 느낌과 흡사해졌다. 본체와 마찬가지로 배면에 나사 구멍이 있어서 거치대에 고정할 수 있다.
코일 스프링이 내장된 피스톤의 모습. 내부에 사용된 가변저항도 DFP의 것에 비하면 신뢰도가 높은 것이다. 휠 내부처럼 페달에도 옵티컬 센서를 도입하면 더욱 좋았겠지만 아직 그런 휠은 존재하지 않는다.
이런 구조를 하고 있다.
참고로 DFP의 페달부. 이것도 전에 비하면 많이 개선되었다고 하지만 압력이 부족하고, 가변저항의 고질적인 접촉불량으로 평가절하된 상태이다. 특히 클러치 페달의 부재가 많이 아쉬웠다.
G25의 핵심이라고 할 수 있는 수동 6단 쉬프터의 모습이다. 대부분의 버튼이 이쪽으로 옮겨왔기 때문 일부 사용자들의 원성도 있는 모양이지만 그 덕분에 더욱 멋진 형태가 되었다. 버튼 위의 알록달록했던 프린트를 과감히 생략함으로써 보다 실감나는 느낌이 되었고 터치감도 준수한 편이다.
참고로 DFP의 경우, 이렇게 버튼이 휠 스포크에 집중되어 있다. 일면 편리하긴 하지만 사실감은 떨어진다.
변속 레버 역시 가죽으로 마감되어 있다. 기계적인 조작감은 일반 승용차에 비해 가벼운데, 일부 스포츠카가 이것과 비슷한 느낌을 갖고 있다고 한다. 기어를 넣을 때마다 딸깍거리는 경쾌한 소리가 난다. 레버를 수직으로 눌러서 6단 기어 위치에 놓으면 후진 기어가 된다.
가운데 보이는 은색 스위치는 변속 방식을 바꾸기 위한 것이다. 즉, 시퀀셜 방식과 H-패턴 방식을 선택할 수 있다. 레버를 수직으로 누른 상태로 스위치를 돌리면 변환된다.
쉬프터부의 고정은 기본적으로 휠과 동일하지만 발이 하나 더 있어서 좀 더 단단하게 고정된다. 물론 거치대에 나사로 고정할 수도 있다.
또 하나의 재미있는 요소. 고정 나사가 수납된다. 돌려서 잠근 다음 누르면 쏙 들어간다. 조작시 손에 걸리지 않도록 배려한 부분이다. 본체의 경우도 마찬가지다.
그에 비하면 DFP의 것은 그냥 밖에 드러나 있고 마감도 부실하다.

매뉴얼과 설치 디스크. 홈페이지에서 다운받는 소프트웨어 보다 더 상위 버전을 제공하므로 설치는 반드시 이 시디를 이용해야 한다.
피씨에 설치된 컨트롤 패널의 모습. 휠의 회전각과 각 페달의 압력을 체크할 수 있다. 제대로 동작하게 하려면 여러가지 설정 옵션을 꼼꼼히 살펴봐야 한다.
일단 PS2의 Gran Turismo 4와 연결해서 테스트 주행을 해보았다. 이제서야 그의 부제답게 리얼 드라이빙 시뮬레이터를 만나는 느낌이다. DFP와 비교하면 조작감이 판이하게 다른데, 확실히 이쪽이 실차에 가깝다. 회전이 부드럽고 기어 소음도 확연히 줄어들었다. 휠의 반발력이 보다 분명하고, 무엇보다 유격이 없기 때문에 고속에서 덜커덩거리며 차체를 휘청거리게 하는 일이 없다. 또한 카운터 반응시 손에서 휠을 스르르 미끄러뜨리는 맛이 제법이다.
페달의 느낌이 달라지면서 속도를 제어하는 것이 좀 더 어렵게 되었는데, 적응하려면 라이센스 모드를 새롭게 시작해야 할 것 같다. 어시스트를 모두 껐다고는 하지만 전과 달리 허무한 스핀을 몇차례나 겪었다. 가장 큰 이유는 브레이크 페달의 압력을 버틸만한 단단한 거치대가 없기 때문일 것이다.
쉬프터는 어쩔 수 없이 시퀀셜 모드로 테스트할 수 밖에 없었는데, 본래 6단 쉬프터로 설계된 탓에 조작감이 그리 만족스럽지 못했다. 쉬프트 업을 할 때 실수로 레버를 누른채 당기면 슬롯에 물려버리는 일이 잦았다. 그래서 그런지 DFP에서는 매력적이지 못했던 패들 쉬프터를 활용하게 되는 면이 있다. 물론 그 편이 좀 더 빠른 주행에는 도움이 될 것이다. 6단 쉬프터를 제대로 활용하려면 피씨용 시뮬레이터를 이용해야 하는데 아직 준비가 안된 관계로 테스트해보지 못했다. 조만간 가능할테지만 이것을 완벽하게 지원하는 소프트웨어 수가 아직 손에 꼽을 정도로 적기 때문에 급하게 마음 먹을 필요는 없을 것 같다. 차후에 각종 소프트웨어 개발사의 지원이 이어지기를 기대해본다.
아쉬운 점이 있다면 아직도 휠의 크기가 작다는 것. 전보다 직경이 커졌다고는 하지만 실차의 스포츠 휠이 320-350mm의 직경을 갖는 것에 비하면 조금 부족하다. 오직 F1머신 만이 작은 직경의 휠을 갖는다. 이 정도 제품이라면 좀 더 사양에 욕심을 부려보면 어땠을까? 물론 휠의 직경이 커지면 포스 피드백의 강화는 물론, 늘어난 무게에 비례해서 내구성도 더욱 강화해야 하기 때문에 여러 모로 복잡한 일이 된다. 결과적으로 더욱 비싼 값을 치러야 할 것이다. 과거 DFP의 경우 Frex에서 멋지게 개조한 제품을 내놓긴 했지만, 표면적인 것에 그쳐서 아쉬움이 남았다. 관련 포럼을 보니 G25 역시 벌써부터 개조에 대한 요청이 많은데, 내부 설계가 바뀌지 않는 이상 순정 상태가 나으리라는 것은 의심의 여지가 없다. 로지텍의 개발자도 역학적인 것을 고려해서 순정을 추천하고 있고, 개조시 품질 보증을 받을 수 없다는 이유를 들어 설득력을 높이고 있다. 아쉽더라도 언젠가 더욱 개선된 제품을 만나볼 수 있기를 희망하는 것이 좋을 것 같다.
정리하건대, 앞서 언급한 대로 현시점에서는 최선의 제품 구성이라고 생각한다. 물론 이 이상의 제품군도 분명 존재하고 있지만 합리적인 가격에 이 정도 품질의 구성품을 갖추기는 힘들 것이다. 이 정도 만으로도 초입자들에게는 과분한 장비가 되어버리는 것이 아닌가 싶다. 단지 게임이 아닌 레이스의 세계로 이끌 정도의 힘은 충분히 갖추었다고 생각하기 때문이다. 개발자들의 열정까지 느낄 수 있었다면 과언이 될까…

전 슈마허보다 작고하신 세나를 더 좋아라했는데, 아쉬운대로 슈마허가 그자릴 지켜주긴 했습니다. 돈도 많이 벌엇으니 좀 쉬면서 노후 대비 해야할 슈마허…. 그래도 독일의 멋진 자연속에서 잘 지내겠죠. 그의 자녀들에게 레이싱게임을 가르치면서 말입니다.
지누판님이 그뒤를 이어 F1그랑프리의 제왕이 되신다면 정말 고맙겠습니다. 쌩유~

I have had my licence since 1999 and have loved every winter so far.

I have called my shop today and they think that i will get my wheel at 14 nov.
Well. i dont know if im good to drive. But its pretty simple if you take it easy. But its fun to play sometimes
Now i also got a new Truckdriver license so i will drive 25.25m and 60ton this winter. That will be very intresting.

I think north europeans are generally good at special condition driving because of their unique climate. I heard that even old ladies could drive wagons sliding its heavy tail. Then, her sons could be a natural rally driver.
Truck license is more difficult to get, isn’t it? You already got it while waiting for a 60t machine! You must be a more talented driver than me.

Well. we have a special climate here yes. Some times we got +30C and some times at winter -30C and colder. But its even worse for those who lives even higher in sweden then i do. I live almost in the middle of Sweden.
but now i have boght me an Nissan Patrol 4wd and i want it to begin snowing so i can try my “new” car :D.

Your own photos really helped me. Judging from your pics, you have some good hobbies. Especially, that engine is impressive! You even used to repair your own car. Hello to your wife and son, and a lovely cat. You look happy with your family.
By the way it looks very cold there to see your clothes and heavy snow. I thought I got a pretty cold winter here in Korea, but you’re living a really cold life there. Take care not to catch cold.

Maybe it would be time to change my way of life. So I’m spending these days to find the new way just enjoying with some interesting stuffs. Lundberg // Unfortunately my PCs are not so powerful to play games. I have no plan to upgrade my PC for the time being, though I am interested in such a good sims on PC.
Currently I am playing only on the consoles like PS2 and Xbox just waiting for a PS3’s launch.
Gran Turismo HD, Formula 1 Championship Edition, Motorstorm on PS3 will be my next step.
What are your favorite games? What are you playing these days? I’m just curious.

GTR 2 have i tried out. But i will try rFactor, live for speed and most wanted.
i must say that i really love this wheel
Have played whit it for 2hours now.
Im thinking to not buy PS3.
Im going to buy Nintendo Wii 8dec.
PS3 is going to be to much expensive.

Yeah~ lovely wheel it is. It must be the best partner with GTR2 on the Windows PC platform.
It’s regrettable I cannot drive with you. But someday it would be possible. huh?
I thought I would adopt PS3 as a affordable Linux PC.
As some sims are porting to Linux, I’ll try them on PS3 if possible.
Of course I’ll play PS3 exclusive titles preferentially.

I´m planning to put one real wheel (about 34 cm.) on my G25 (and you know that when planning something I do it … :)).
I have a second unit of G25 for spare parts, and it does not matter to me to experience a little with which I have mounted.

I still think the VPP RRP is the best racing chassis in the market (although since I bought it I haven´t watched if any company have sent some new one).
All my friends try it with GT4 and they are surprised. They think is near to an arcade machine.
VPP has increased it price a little (640 €).

rebla47 // Yeah, VPP must be a good wheel seat. I couldn’t find any other noticeable product. There are a few kinds of cockpits either in Korean market. The price is about 400,000won each.(about 450 USD) But I am hesitating to make a decision. Because I am waiting for more attractive product. In a sense, you are lucky to meet such a good product.

The problem I see it is all metal, and probably very heavy (and it is Momo, probably very expansive so… ). With one more light (and cheap)could works well (it´s possible I try it… :)).

rebla47 // Yesterday I tried ‘Battle Gear 4′ in an arcade. The wheel is surely much better than a home-use-product. And the game play was pretty good experience, though the opponent cars seem to be cheating in a race.

You have been able to test the version with clutch and 32 inch LCD screen, or the normal one?.
Pity that has not been announced a conversion for PS3…

Before my travel to Germany, I tried it with mines. I get to change the acelerator for the clutch pedals (is not dificult) and to fit the pedals down to my VPP race frame. But the height in my VPP was too low, and I returned to the original mounting.
To invert down the pedals is ideal for toe-heel driving, some not very necesary in console games (and probably in no one videogame).

Rebla47 // Not bad. The invert setting would be helpful to practice heel-and-toe foot working. But I don’t think it’s necessary.
